How did we end up in this mess?

250 years of progress?
Yep, because that’s about when the industrial revolution started. Very simply put, it’s when we started moving away from doing things by hand, to doing things with machines, using steam and power.

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the world has undergone a lot of economic and technological changes.

And we have a lot to be thankful for! We are now living in amazing times. We live longer, are healthier, safer, smarter, wealthier, more productive, more connected than ever before.

Humans are prospering, and there is an ever-growing number of us.

However, it’s also come at a price, and we’re now slowly coming to realize this.

Particularly in the past 50 years, the world has seen growth like we’ve never seen before…

And as individual wealth increased, the desire to buy more goods and services also increased.

Question

Which values and beliefs do you think have a strong influence on our current unsustainable way of living?

Why do we need so many planets?

We all know that we have one planet.

Take a moment to think about the number of resources needed to keep up with our ever-growing demands.

We all know that we have one planet Earth.

But at the moment we actually need the equivalent of 1.7 Planet Earths to provide the resources that we use and absorb the waste and pollution we create.

Now it doesn’t take a climate scientist to understand that that is not a situation that we can sustain for a very long time. But unfortunately, it gets even worse…

Because if everyone would live like the average European, we would need 2.8 earth’s to fulfil all our needs and demands.

And if everyone would live like the average American today, we need a whopping five planets to sustain all our needs. Five planets! Let that sink in for a bit.

We are now living on this beautiful planet with close to 8 billion people and this number is still constantly increasing.

And businesses develop, produce and distribute products for these 8 billion people. Increasingly crossing the limit of the planet. Or in other words, crossing the planetary boundaries.

See you in the next one! πŸ‘‡πŸ₯³πŸ‘‡
